Alberta Airport Guide

Alberta’s two main airports, the Calgary and Edmonton International airports are among the busiest in Canada, together handling more than 20 million passengers per year. At both airports look out for the White Hat volunteers who are on hand to help make your transition through the airport as hassle free as possible. Calgary International Airport is the best choice if you’re planning to head for the prairies or the beautiful Rocky Mountain town of Banff, which is just 140 kilometres from Calgary. Edmonton International Airport is a hub for flights to northern Canada. It’s also the closest international airport to Jasper, which is about a four-hour drive away – or you can take a chartered flight from Edmonton to the small Jasper-Hinton airport, just outside Jasper.

Calgary International Airport (IATA code YYC)

Calgary International Airport is the third busiest in Canada, with flights to all the main cities throughout Canada, as well as to the United States, the Caribbean, Europe and Asia. Calgary International Airport is also home to the longest runway in Canada. The airport is located about 17 kilometres northeast of Calgary’s central business district. It consists of a single terminal divided into four concourses. Concourses A to C provide domestic flights and flights to and from the United States. Concourse D handles international flights, as well as flights to the United States that qualify for US border pre-clearance.

Complimentary shuttles ferry passengers between arriving flights and customs. The airport includes two lounges – the Servisair Chinook Lounge on concourse D and the Rocky Mountain Lounge on concourse C, which handles US departures.

Getting to and from Calgary International Airport
Between 8 a.m. and midnight, the Allied Downtown Shuttle Service leaves at half-hour intervals for various points in the city of Calgary. You can buy tickets for the service online or at the airport, from the counter near Gate C on the Arrivals level. The same service accepts bookings from various locations across Calgary to the airport.

Alternatively, Calgary Transit provides public bus services, with three main routes to and from the airport. Route 300 is an express route between the airport and downtown Calgary that departs every 20 to 30 minutes. Route 100 connects the airport to McKnight-Westwinds LRT Station, and Route 430 links the airport to the Northpointe and Standstone bus terminals.

Taxi stands are situated on the Arrivals level, and car rental counters are located on the Departures level, opposite the main terminal building.

Edmonton International Airport handles flights to over 50 destinations within Canada, as well as to the United States, South America and Europe. It’s Canada’s fifth busiest airport (after Calgary International, which is at number four) and is one of the country’s largest. It’s located about 26 kilometres from downtown Edmonton.

Edmonton International Airport includes a wide range of restaurants, cafes, kiosks and shops, and provides free Wi-Fi and charging points for computers. It also features periodic live performances, with folk music and other bands to entertain passengers.

An information booth is available opposite door 7 on the Arrivals level. Several ATMs are available throughout the airport, and international currency exchange points are located in both the Arrivals and Departures halls.

Getting to and from Edmonton International Airport
Edmonton Transit System provides an express bus service between the airport and the Century Park LRT Station, via its route 747. The service runs from 4:10 a.m. to midnight, with buses departing hourly or more often at busy times.

The Edmonton SkyShuttle covers selected stops (especially at major hotels) throughout Edmonton, but must be pre-booked, either online or by telephone.

Taxi stands are available outside the Arrivals hall, and car rental counters are situated on the ground level (Level P1) of the parkade.
