Glenelg
A tram runs directly from Adelaide's city centre to the suburb of Glenelg, which includes a gorgeous long white-sand beach, and is the oldest European settlement on mainland South Australia.
For the young or young at heart, Glenelg also includes the Beachhouse, a popular entertainment complex featuring a Ferris wheel and a carousel, a mini golf course, a five-storey play castle, dodgem cars and even bumper boats fitted with water cannons.
Adelaide winelands
The winelands surrounding Adelaide are responsible for over half of all the wine produced in Australia. Key among the winelands are the beautiful Barossa Valley, which is famous for its full-bodied Shiraz wines and includes over 150 wineries. This includes Clare Valley, known for its Riesling, and lovely Adelaide Hills, known for its cool climate.
You can join any of a number of wine-tasting tours from within Adelaide, or plan your own tour and rent a car.
Rundle Mall
In the heart of Adelaide city centre is Rundle Mall, a pedestrian street mall that's home to the flagship stores of many Australian retailers, along with a wide selection of boutiques, restaurants and coffee shops.
The mall is known for a number of outdoor sculptures. Among them the popular landmark The Spheres; consisting of two large stainless steel spheres, one balanced atop the other, and a group of life-size bronze pigs. The pigs even have names – Horatio, Truffles, Augusta and Oliver.
Adelaide Botanic Gardens
Adelaide Botanic Gardens include a huge variety of both indigenous Australian and exotic plants, along with a stunning Victorian glasshouse (the Palm), a rose garden and the Bicentenary Conservatory; which is the largest conservatory in the southern hemisphere. The gardens also include the interesting Museum of Economic Botany, which focuses on useful plants, and is housed in an elegant colonial building, and a wetlands area with aquatic plant gardens.
Art Gallery of South Australia
Founded in 1881 and with an impressive, colonnaded facade, the Art Gallery of South Australia houses upwards of 38,000 works of art, including notable collections of indigenous Australian and colonial art.
South Australian Museum
Also on the North Terrace, which is Adelaide's cultural boulevard, the South Australian Museum is an outstanding natural history museum, founded in 1856.
