Miami travel guide
Miami travel guideMiami holidays can be as relaxed or as energetic as you like. Stroll around the striking Miami Beach Architectural District, then unwind on the city’s most famous main stretch of sand. In the evenings, take your pick from Miami’s delicious restaurants – offering a range of Cuban-inspired cuisines – and dance the night away on the infamous South Beach.
Prefer to discover Florida’s wild side? No Miami holiday would be complete without a visit to Everglades National Park. It might just be an hour’s drive from the city, but the Everglades feels like a whole different world. Affectionately known as the ‘River of Grass’, this tranquil national park is a patchwork of forests, wetlands, mangroves and swamps – and it’s teeming with wildlife. Take a boat trip in search of alligators, crocodiles, bobcats, raccoons and more.

When is the best time to visit Miami?
Winters are warm and a touch drier. The city experiences cold fronts from late October through March. However, the average monthly temperature for any month has never been recorded as being under 15 degrees Centigrade (January averages 16 °C). The Hurricane season is usually June-August, but Miami isn’t as badly hit as other Tropical areas, and bad weather doesn’t tend to hang around for long.
Take a look at our climate a chart below.

Miami attractions
With so many different things to see, do and experience, it can be difficult deciding what to do first. Between the beautiful beaches, stunning landscape, glorious sights to behold and not to mention amazing shopping and dining facilities; Miami will show you the time of your life.
Principle Sights
Like we said there’s so much to do in this city, you’re pretty spoilt for choice.
South Beach
South Beach is popular with both tourists and locals alike, with something always going on, the fun time vibes emit throughout the entire city.
Complete with its own historic district, swanky hotels, night clubs and a spectacular palm tree lined beach at Ocean Drive, you can see why it’s a favourite amongst those from far and wide. With people striving to look their best at every given opportunity here, people-watching has become an everyday sport. Española Way is one of the best places to sit and observe the world go by, with hacienda style houses to look at and amazing al fresco restaurants to dine in. However, you can get to know the area better by taking one of the free daily tours, which depart from the Art Deco Center at 1200 Ocean Drive.
Key Biscayne
If you want even better beaches then head to Key Biscayne, which is linked to the mainland by the Rickenbacker Causeway. Alongside these sand filled paradises you’ll also find huge blissfully peaceful parks, such as the beautiful Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park and Crandon Park. Whilst here you can even visit the Key Biscayne Aquarium, where you can observe and learn about the region’s marine life.
Bayfront Park
At the southernmost point of Miami Beach you’ll find Bayfront Park, which is an amazing place to just wander through and take in the surrounding scenery. With perfectly manicured lawns for as far as you can see, alongside delightful coffee shops, galleries and idyllic picnic spots, you’ll feel as though you’ve been transported into a another world in this peaceful side of the city.
Little Havana
If you want to delve into the culture of the city a little more, take a trip to the joyful Little Havana, where you can experience the authentic Latin soul flowing through the area. You’ll be able to enjoy a variety of wonderful things from Cuban cigars to fabulously piquant salsas with a seafood lunch, alongside the passionate Latin rhythms that flow from the area’s vibrant bars.
Coral Gables
Drive half an hour south of downtown Miami and visit the stunning Coral Gables. This beautifully planned garden suburb for the stars was created during the 1920s, and is now home to an array of upscale stores, fine dining and beautiful hotels. Amongst these hotels you’ll find the Biltmore Hotel, complete with a Venetian pool - the only one that appears on the National Register of Historic Places.
The water
With so much water surrounding this beautiful city, taking a Miami boat tour gives you the amazing opportunity to observe the city from a completely different angle, and creep up alongside some of the city’s stunning waterfront properties. If you don’t fancy creeping, and want a bit more adventure on your Miami water tour, then you can try the ‘thriller’ option, with a 60mph speed boat. These trips from the Bayside Marina and various points along the coast, offer the perfect opportunity to view Miami’s twinkling skyline, peaceful islands, pods of dolphins, and even the Everglades.
Miami Zoo
If you head over to Richmond you’ll find the amazing Miami Zoo. This well-respected institution has a thorough and impressive programme that cares for endangered, rare and ‘at risk’ animals including tigers, crocodiles, exotic birds and Komodo Dragons.
Game Works
Children are also catered for in this wondrous city, with places like the Game Works at Coral Gables offering up an electronic paradise. With amazing features - which includes state-of-the-art shoot ‘em ups, virtual reality simulators and numerous other thrilling computer games - they’ll be occupied for hours on end.

So whether you want designer threads at affordable prices, cheap and cheerful souvenirs, or some wondrous bargains and trinkets on the street markets, the city has surprising delights for you around every corner.
Miami Beach
If you’re looking for malls that exude glitz and glamour from every corner, then head toward Miami Beach. Here you’ll find an abundance of residential and leisure developments along the barrier island off Miami’s coastline, providing some of the best shopping facilities this side of Hollywood.
Head to the north of the island and visit Bal Harbour. Here you’ll find a complex of designer boutiques alongside designer brands (including Oscar De La Renta and Marc Jacobs), homeware shops, gift stores, cosmetics outlets, shops catering for children and an abundance of dining facilities. Here you’ll also find two favourite US speciality department stores in the shape of Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue.
Kendall
Back on the mainland within the Kendall area of the city, you’ll find another shopping mall that caters for everything highbrow. The Falls is home to multiple stores, including Victoria’s Secret, Abercrombie & Fitch, Pandora and Swarovski, as well as American stalwarts Bloomingdales and Macy’s. With many more boutiques, jewellers, cosmetics shops, restaurants, cafes, coffee shops and a cinema; this is a shopping experience that’ll fill the day.

With 350 shops ranging from Adidas and Converse to Burberry and Calvin Klein, as well as the likes of GAP, Gucci, Hot Topic and a Barneys outlet; this is Florida’s biggest and most comprehensive shopping mall.
Best of the rest
There are various other malls throughout Miami, including the huge Dolphin Mall filled with major stores such as Bloomingdales, GAP, Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren, in addition to more than 200 smaller unique shops. Areas like Coconut Grove, add a distinct character offering the chance to peruse the unique local arts and craft stores, galleries and markets in this lively bo-ho neighbourhood.

Miami food and drink
Miami’s crossroads culture, where the Deep South gradually gives way to Hispanic central America, Cuba and the Caribbean, is easily reflected in the city’s cuisine too.
The region is perhaps best known for creating the term ‘New World Cuisine’ - a catch-all that describes the blending of local produce, Latin American and Caribbean elements, with the rigour and finesse of European gastronomy.
Throughout downtown Miami, there’s a constantly evolving, and expanding scene encompassing Tex-Mex, fusion, creole and Cajun delights - and there’s bargains and brilliance to be had in equal measure, if you know where to look. Street food is fast, fresh and (usually) safe, and corner delis and diners spike up the all-American experience, with burgers, grills and all-day breakfasts in the perma-busy streets of Downtown.
If in doubt, head to the malls, entertainment complexes and Port of Miami ‘shopping villages’, serving all you can eat salads, buffets, seafood specials and family-focused meals.
Miami Beach is where the celebrity chefs come to play, in a series of elaborate and theatrical new venues, combining fine French dining, energetic show cooking and romantic and delicate Michelin-starred dishes.
Surprising influences from South America are on the rise, such as Peruvian spices and chilies, Ceviche (a raw, marinated fish dish stew), and lesser-known cuts of beef from the grasslands of Argentina and Uruguay.
Breads and pastries from Venezuela are excellent, as are the stone crabs and seafood from the waters of the Gulf, lobsters from Maine and juicy Florida salads, complete with the freshest citrus fruits you’ve ever tasted. Recently, Asian cooking has become one of the region’s most popular imports - with spicy noodles, dim-sum and Thai lemongrass finding their way onto the city’s top tables. And sushi and tempura is surprisingly sophisticated here, too.
But amid all the change, the headline-grabbing new openings and the fashionable fads, you’ll find the hotels and restaurants of South Beach cooking up soul food, southern fried chicken, seasonal salads and sensational Key Lime pies every day of the year - so, whatever your personal favourites, Miami won’t disappoint. And be prepared - the influences may be global, but portions are decidedly American sized!

Miami nightlife
With a lively and vibrant atmosphere 24/7, and the sound of a thousand PA systems pumping across the city’s dance floors, you’re guaranteed a wild and amazing night in Miami. With the rhythmic sounds of Latin-tinged disco, bluesy rock and smooth jazz being deeply embedded in the Miami landscape, it’s no wonder that this city just loves to party; making it one of the most electrifying places anywhere in the world.
Miami Beach
Down at Miami Beach you can experience the Shore Club, situated on Ocean Drive. This decadent and beautiful club gives you the opportunity to sit indoors or lounge outside in complete luxury in one of the Skybars. Head on down to Washington Avenue, where you can check out the unpretentious Automatic Slims, which plays amazing party favourites for all to enjoy. For something a little dingy, yet enjoyable check out Mac’s Club Deuce, which is a great place to experience some rock music - it’s even attracted the likes of Keith Richards when he’s been in town.
Lincoln Lane
On Lincoln Lane you’ll find the cool and sophisticated Buck 15, which is a grungy outpost blaring all the latest indie rock music throughout, keeping the city’s hipsters in high spirits. But for cool nights, loud music, perfect dancing opportunities and world famous performers head over to Cameo, where the state of the art sound systems and VIP enclosures will keep you entertained all night.
Best of the rest
If you fancy something a little bit lighter that sounds like it’s jumped out of the 1920s, head over to Washington Avenue where the sultry jazz-infused sounds of Jazid float onto the street. Or for something different again, make your way to the Magnum Lounge on Biscayne Boulevard, where the Broadway style show tunes and birdcage stylings will keep you entertained all night. Finally Mokai on 23rd Street, is one of the fanciest places in town where dressing up and sipping delicious drinks is a must; but ask your hotel’s concierge to get you on ‘the list’ if you don’t want to get turned away at the door.
