Picturesque landscapes
Cheap flights to Slovenia are not the only good reason to travel to this country. Slovenia’s biggest draw and attraction is its diverse and natural beauty. The Julian Alps provide the perfect background for dramatic landscapes with their imposing presence and snow-capped peaks. They are the place to go for travellers who love skiing and hiking. And with more than 2,000 hours of sun each year, it’s no wonder that Slovenia is called ‘the sunny side of the Alps’.
Mount Triglav, the highest mountain in the country, is steeped in mythology and Slovenian culture – it’s even embedded on the flag. Lake Bled is a romantic and popular location among visitors. Its green-blue waters reflect the island and medieval castle at the centre of the lake, with the Alps completing the background. Although the coastline is only 27 miles long, its Italian-influenced towns, clear aqua water and pleasant weather bring many here for a holiday under the sun.
The underworld
If being above ground is not enough, then the Karst region has plenty of locations for you to visit the world below the surface. The Postojna Cave is a popular tourist site that spans almost 15 miles, and the Škocjan Caves are an iconic UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the largest known underground systems in the world.
When to go
Slovenia’s weather varies across different parts of the country, from the coast to the Alps. Summer temperatures are warm, ranging from 20 to 25 degrees Celsius and sometimes reaching 30 degrees Celsius or more. Winter temperatures can drop below zero accompanied by snow and heavy, cold winds called the Bora, especially in the mountains. Spring and early autumn have the most pleasant weather but they also bring in some rain.
The country can be divided into three different areas that influence the weather: the mountainous regions of north, the coast on the west, and the hills and valleys of the central region. The northern Alps bring lots of snow, which makes it a popular location for winter activities like skiing. The coast is the warmest area with a Mediterranean-like climate. The interior has a moderate continental climate.
The best time to visit Slovenia is during the shoulder seasons in April and May or September and October, when the crowds are few and the prices are lower. The mild climate is perfect for exploring and other activities like hiking, rafting and swimming. Summer is when most visitors arrive and prices are highest. Museums and attractions open. Winter is the low season but draws people to the mountains for skiing. The Christmas and New Year season also draws in crowds.
