Cheapest time to fly to Malpensa Airport (MPX)
Whilst Milan has four distinct seasons, making the weather a deciding factor for when to fly, it still remains a year-round destination. Flights to Milan are in high demand during fashion weeks in spring and autumn, the Christmas markets in December, and throughout the football year for big matches. In the summer months, open-air street festivals and concerts entertain visitors and locals alike. Keep your eyes peeled for bargains on last-minute flights all year round.
Flying to Malpensa Airport (MPX)
Milan Malpensa is the largest of three airports to serve the city, but it is located 29 miles away from the city. British Airways offer direct flights to Milan Malpensa from London Heathrow, whilst Flybe can take you directly there from Manchester. Choose from a plethora of indirect flights departing from airports all over the UK, with airlines such as KLM, Swiss Air, Air France, and Lufthansa. The main difficulty will be deciding when to book your return flights.
On arrival and getting around MPX
A shuttle bus connects the two terminals should you need to transfer between the two – handy to know if you need to get to the train station which is located at terminal one. Most other facilities are found at both terminals, such as ATMs, bureaus de change, Wi-Fi access, chemists, first aid stations, and information desks. You will find a good selection of restaurants and cafés, usually serving Italian food. There is also a good selection of shops available at both terminals, including duty-free for non-EU passengers, in particular clothing boutiques, designer stores and jewellers.
Getting to the city from the airport
Malpensa has good public transport links into the city. Catch the Malpensa Express train from just outside Terminal 1 into Milan’s central station, the journey takes about 45-50 minutes. You can catch the bus from either terminal to Milan Central Station, or the Malpensa Shuttle Air Pullman coach which also links both terminals to the Central station in about 50 minutes. Alternatively, you could use one of the many taxis that are always stationed outside the terminals, but this is the most expensive option with fixed fares to the city of 90€. If you prefer to drive, there are many car rental options but central Milan is more easily navigated on foot or by public transport.
Don't forget before you fly
As a British citizen you won’t need to get a visa or any travel documentation other than your passport to visit Milan, making it a perfect destination for last-minute flights in 2025 / 2026. You also have the option of either buying your euros before you leave, or making use of the ATMs whilst you are there. Check with your bank before hopping on your flight to find out what the relevant charges will be.
