Luxembourg’s capital city
Perched above the clifftops is Luxembourg City, the capital. Cheap flights to Luxembourg will take you to this city boasting a marvellous landscape with deep and narrow valleys, rivers and historic sites. Its previous settlements can be seen at places like the Bock Casemates, a network of underground fortifications, and the Bock itself where a castle once stood. Furthermore, the Walls of the Corniche provide amazing views of the city earning it the title of ‘the most beautiful balcony in Europe’.
Picturesque castles and manors
If you wish to visit a real castle, the town of Vianden boasts an incredible fairy-tale castle among the green hills set against the hillside town. The ruins of Bourscheid Castle also provide an excellent sight. This Gothic-Romanesque building stands 137 metres above the River Sûre and offers extensive views and pleasant walks. The village of Esch-sur- Sûre is considered one of the most outstanding locations in the country with its ruined manor house built above the cliffs and overlooking the village below.
When to go
Luxembourg enjoys a relatively mild climate, with lots of rain and no extreme weather. On average, summers reach a temperature of 18 degrees Celsius while winter goes as low as zero. Seasons vary slightly between the northern part of the country and south due to a difference in elevation. The north is higher which makes it a little colder and it has more frequent snowfall in in winter.
Winter is characterised by cold weather with cloudy and windy days. Atlantic air currents can create milder days while the Eastern European currents can cause temperatures to drop below zero. At the opposite extreme, summer experiences warm pleasant weather with cool nights. Rain and cool days are still common during the summer, and temperatures rarely peak at around 30 degrees Celsius. July and August are the hottest and busiest times of the year.
Spring and autumn have mostly pleasant weather. Spring gradually becomes warmer and has lots of rain. Autumn can be cool, wet and sometimes windy. The best time to visit is during the late spring and early autumn to avoid high crowds and higher prices. Summer is peak season, especially around July and August. Winter also sees an influx around Christmas. Book your tickets well in advance to make savings during these periods.
