Cheapest time to fly to London Heathrow (LHR)
Flights to London Heathrow tend to vary in price, depending on the time of year and where you are flying from but, as a general rule, the cheapest time to travel to the English capital is February or March, although there are great bargains on last-minute flights available throughout the year. Flight prices tend to rise during the school holidays and also around the holiday season. So a February holiday could be an affordable and exciting trip, even if it could be a bit chilly.
Flying to London Heathrow
London Heathrow (LHR) is 14 miles outside of central London and is the second-busiest airport in the world (surpassed only by Dubai International), offering both national and international flights. It has five terminals and is well served by airlines, such as Malaysia Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, Qatar Airways, and British Airways (who have their own terminal), which offer direct flights from London Heathrow to many international and European destinations.
On arrival and getting around LHR
Heathrow has five separate terminals, with different airlines operating out of each one. It is important to check online which terminal you will be flying out of. Terminals two and three are just a short walk from each other, and terminals four and five are easily accessible by free trains and buses. Terminal five is the shopping hub and the newest of the five terminals where you will find Burberry, Cartier, Boots, Cath Kidston and Harrods – the perfect place for a pre-flight splurge.
Getting to the city from the airport
There are many options for getting from London Heathrow (LHR) to central London. The most economic option is to get the ‘Tube’ (the London Underground). You can catch the Piccadilly line from all terminals and be in central London in roughly an hour. The fastest way to get into central London is to catch the Heathrow Express, a non-stop train to Piccadilly, which runs every 15 minutes. Journey time is only around a quarter of an hour. Other options include the Heathrow Express, which runs to Paddington but via local stations, the National Express coach to various destinations, including Victoria, and travelling by taxi.
