Cultural capital
Your first destination in this Baltic country should be the capital and main city, Riga. Cheap flights to Latvia will often arrive in this historic city, which offers a rich cultural experience for visitors thanks to its art, music, theatre productions and colourful architecture. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Old Town, is located near the Daugava River. Its medieval cobblestone streets and impressive churches and cathedrals are a must-see. Take a break at one of several cafes before strolling through Riga’s parks, which bring a touch of greenspace to a vibrant city.
Baltic beaches
When you’ve had enough of the city, head to Jurmala for a beach getaway. This seaside resort boasts 32 kilometres of beaches, making it the largest resort town in the Baltics. For a more tranquil location, the Jurkaine bluffs offer an untouched, picturesque coastline to explore. For something truly unique, the Northern Fort fills the shoreline with abandoned subterranean labyrinths and bunkers.
Nature and castles
Moving inland, the Gauja National Park is just one of four national parks that are characterised by dense forests, natural springs, sandstone outcrops, cliffs, caves and historical sites like the Tauraida Castle. Close by is the historic, red-coloured Sigulda Castle. The Venta River has some of Europe’s widest waterfalls. Although only two metres tall, the rive is the best place to cool off during the summer.
Best time to go to Latvia
Latvia has a climate of mild, rainy summers and very cold winters. Summer temperatures are on average 20 degrees Celsius, although they can sometimes rise above 30 degrees Celsius. While mostly dry, rain and thunderstorms are more common, especially inland, during this season. Winter temperature remain below five degrees Celsius and can sometimes fall as low as -30 degrees Celsius. The winter months also have strong winds and heavy snowfall.
The best times to go to Latvia on a budget is in late spring or early autumn, when the weather is pleasant, but the crowds and costs are low. Spring, in general, arrives later than in other parts of Europe; April can still experience snow, and early May can sometimes be cold. Autumn tends to be grey and wet, although early autumn can sometime reach 20 degrees Celsius.
As for seasonal activities, spring is ideal for boating because of the high-water levels from melted snow. Autumn’s changing leaves bring colourful scenery to its National Parks. Skiing and saunas are popular activities during the winter. During the summer, people flock to the beaches and festivities take place all over the country. Take part in the festivities by booking early and find the best rates on flights for this season.
