Golden beaches and green hinterland
Who can resist the allure of golden-sand beaches meeting cerulean waters? They say there’s a beach for everyone in Guadeloupe - whether you want beach bars and sun-loungers or isolated stretches of sand, this archipelago of over a dozen islands will deliver. Grande-Terre, the main island, is populated with gorgeous resorts and pretty beach towns, like St Anne and Le Moule, while the smaller ‘butterfly wing’, Basse-Terre, is home to a wilder landscape.
Spectacular nature
Guadeloupe National Park covers most of Basse-Terre and is the ultimate adventure playground for nature lovers. Criss-crossed by hiking trails like Route de la Traversée Guadeloupe, you’ll find epic lookouts, dramatic waterfalls with swimming holes and the smouldering volcano, La Soufrière. Take a boat ride to the teeny islands of Marie-Galante, La Désirade and Les Saintes or explore uninhabited Petite Terre. Pigeon Island’s Réserve Cousteau has the best diving in Guadeloupe and its Plage de Malendure is the place to go for a selection of water sports.
A taste of French culture
Find cheap flights to Guadeloupe to experience the unique, exotic, and irresistible blend of French and Caribbean cuisine. Creole dishes feature more fresh fish and fruit than classical French food, but are just as delicious. Enjoy rum cocktails at a beach-front bar in the lively town Gosier, the place for nightlife, or a glass of red wine from a restaurant in Pointe-à-Pitre, the capital. Guadeloupe is, after all, a paradise for the senses.
When to go
Guadeloupe’s tropical climate sees the year divided into two seasons, a dry season in summer (December-May) and a wet season in winter (June-November). Temperatures range from the high twenties to the low thirties degrees Celsius all year, with humidity ranging from 77 to 85 per cent. The most popular period is between December and May, which also makes it the most expensive time for flights. Ideally, find your flights to Guadeloupe six to eight weeks in advance for this period.
Within the high season there are additional holiday-makers around Christmas, New Year, Easter and the French February holidays. Expect prices to spike and aim to book your flights well in advance. January to May are the driest months and the best times for snorkelling and diving.
Last-minute bargain flights can be found during Guadeloupe’s winter off-season, apart from during July and August when a surge of European and American tourists arrive on their summer holidays. August and September are hurricane season, which can bring weather which disrupts travel plans. Rainfall can last for 14 days out of the month, so be certain to pack your rain gear and be prepared to find alternative, indoor activities.
