Gorgeous cityscapes and breathtaking nature
With an area twice that of Britain and a population less than London, Sweden feels spacious. Its charming, sophisticated, super-clean and colourful cities are the same. Sweden’s green forests stretch as far as the eye can see. The air is pure, the lakes are pristine and the rugged shoreline offers some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe. With established walking trails and endless islands to explore, this is a nature-lovers’ haven. Sweden also has a reputation of being the ‘lively one’ out of the Scandinavian countries; the Swedes certainly know how to have fun.
Midnight sun and Northern Lights
From cosying up next to a log fire in a red cottage to exploring the wild north where reindeer roam or glass shopping in Stockholm, there are plenty of reasons to look for cheap flights to Sweden. From 24-hour sunlight in the summer to the deep dark and twinkling lights of winter, this country is truly a year-round destination. If you’re heading to Sweden in June, then joining a midsummer celebration is a must, as is picking wild blueberries and seeing the midnight sun. In the winter, don’t miss visiting a sauna, skiing and of course, searching for a glimpse of the ephemeral northern lights.
More than IKEA
Every visitor to Sweden should sample some of the local, culinary treats. For example, pickled herring is a way of life here. Next is ‘fika’, which is essentially a coffee break, but enjoyed with more panache and pastries. For architecture aficionados, head to the historic quarter of gorgeous Gothenburg, the medieval heart of Visby and Stockholm, fondly known as ‘beauty on water’ by the locals.
When to go
Sweden is a popular destination in both summer and winter. The midnight sun and great outdoors competes with winter sports and the aurora borealis for travellers’ attention. Prices are highest during the summer, but last-minute deals with Netflights are not uncommon. Booking a couple of months prior to departure will allow you to choose from the largest selection of routes and prices.
The shoulder seasons last from March to May and September to November. Travel during this time is not only cheaper, but less crowded. Flights aren’t the only thing discounted in shoulder seasons; you can likely find some of the best hotels at bargain prices. Try looking for flights to Sweden during the spring and autumn when the kids are still in school, and the weather is mild.
For skiing and other snow sports, December through February is ideal. Prices tend to be moderate during this time. Warm clothing is essential everywhere. If you’re heading anywhere near the coast, be prepared for wind, too. Though the summer sees pleasant temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius, it’s always smart to have a warm jumper on hand, especially if heading north.
