When is the Cheapest Time to Fly to Billund?
Denmark experiences its peak tourist season from mid-June to mid-August. As a result, airfares from all airlines are pushed upwards. The best deals on cheap flights to Billund are usually in the shoulder seasons, May to mid-June and mid-August to September, or in the low season from October to April. Due to the Christmas markets, December is also a popular travel time.
When is the Best Time to Book your Flight to Billund?
To get the best rates on airfares, it is best to book your flights to Billund two or three months in advance. Deals on last-minute flights sometimes come up, but they are not guaranteed to save you money. Being flexible on your travel dates is one of the easiest ways to save, since airfares can vary through the month. Additionally, midweek departures are almost always cheaper than other days of the week.
Flying to Billund Airport (BLL)
One of the busiest cargo airports in Denmark, Billund Airport (BLL) is located just three kilometres north of the town. Return flights operating out of the UK are only consistently available from London Heathrow. Departures from other UK airports do occasionally become available, but for the most flexibility on dates, departing from London Heathrow is essential. Currently, the only direct flights available are offered by British Airways and they are usually the most budget-friendly options. However, indirect routes are also available from KLM, Air France, SN Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa and Scandinavian Airlines. Stopover destinations include Amsterdam, Paris, Brussels, Frankfurt and Stockholm. On average, direct flights will take an hour and a half to two hours, whereas indirect trips will last three and a half to seven hours, depending on the length of the stopover.
On Arrival and Getting Around the Airport
This airport only came about when the son of the founder of the Lego Group decided to build a private runway near the Lego factory in 1961. It snowballed from there and eventually grew into the public airport of today. Billund Airport is a single terminal airport spread over three levels. Departure gates and the Lego shop are located on the first floor, and check-in and arrivals are on the ground floor. The third floor is dedicated to the business class lounge and dining services.
Getting to the City from Billund Airport (BLL)
Billund Airport (BLL) is served by several modes of transport to get you where you need to be. Local bus services run from the airport into the town and around the region. There is also a free shuttle bus to the town centre that leaves from the airport. You can’t miss it; it’s the bright yellow bus with Billund Airport on the side. Car hires and taxi services are also available. The taxi rank is just outside the terminal.
Why visit Billund?
Undoubtedly, one of Billund’s biggest draws is the Lego factory and its affiliated theme park, Legoland. Visitors of all ages flock to the town to get their fill of the little plastic bricks that have defined many a childhood. The town itself was built and developed around the fact that the Lego factory is located here. In fact, Billund produces 90% of the world’s Lego.
Billund has plenty of other attractions, too. For a taste of Denmark’s Viking past, head to Kongernes Jelling, which is part of the Danish National Museum, as they have preserved a Viking monument from the 10th century. These large carved runestones are an important part of Danish history and culture. You can also pop over to Givskud Zoo. One third of all the species there are on the endangered list and as a result, this zoo plays a very important role in international breeding and conservation efforts.

A visa is not required to travel to Denmark on holiday. So long as your passport is valid for the duration of your stay, you are free to enter the country. Unlike many of their European neighbours, Denmark doesn’t use the euro. Instead, they use the Danish krone. It is easy to procure upon arrival or online beforehand. Additionally, if you choose to cycle around the towns and cities, remember to use hand signals when turning and be aware of other cyclists.
