January - Chinese New Year
Market stalls, the 12 zodiac animals, a dragon, lions and dancing are part of the parade down at Fogarty Park on Cairns Esplanade.
March - St. Patrick's Day
Cairns has several Irish bars at prime locations, including Marina Bay and the city mall, for knocking some of the black stuff.
April - Oceania Judo Open Championships
A showcase competition for the finest Judo combatants in the Pacific region. Divided into age groups and gender divisions at the Cairns Convention Centre.
May - Cairns Blues Festival
Two stages with more than 20 blues acts plus camping, food, bar and family fun at Fogarty Park on Cairns Esplanade.
June - Challenge Cairns
A long-distance triathlon with a 100000 Euro prize purse to be distributed across various teams and age categories as they swim, run and bike around Cairns.
July - The Cairns Show
This three day show has extreme sports displays, chainsaw sculpting, sideshows, a fun park, fireworks and the main agricultural show, all at Parramatta Park.
August - Festival Cairns
A festival that celebrates tropical Australia's varied culture, with an art fair, fireworks, a concert, market stalls and more at various city locations.
September - The Cairns Street Buskers Festival
Street theatre, comedy, pavement art, workshops, novelty acts and musicians play in the Botanic Gardens and on the Espanade in a competition.
October - Crocodile Trophy
Described as the 'hardest, longest and most adventurous' mountain bike race in the world, with the first 100km beginning at Lake Tinaroo in Cairns.
November - Great Barrier Reef Marathon
The highlight is the ultra marathon which reaches from Cairns to Port Douglas, but there are also half, 10km and fun run 5km options.
December - Carols by Candlelight
This annual family event, and charity fundraiser, is held at Fogarty Park and organised by the local council, with live music from 6:30pm.
