Viva alternative Las Vegas
Nevada’s capital has so much more to offer than booze, betting and debauchery. While you’ll no doubt want to hit the Strip and dabble in a casino, be sure to take time out to discover these alternative attractions.
Red Rock Canyon
Mother Nature’s answer to the Strip is just 27km to the west. This national conservation area is, in its own way, equally outrageous: a technicolour whirl of sandstone, limestone and the odd dinosaur fossil. It’s a fantastic place to escape the 24-hour casino culture.
The Mob Museum
Possibly the most sinful place in Sin City, and that’s saying something. The Mob Museum charts the war between the mafia and the law. Housed in the former Las Vegas Courthouse, it’s an utterly fascinating experience, with grim artefacts including tommy guns, electric chairs, and even a wall from the St Valentine’s Day Massacre.
Art and culture
Home to so many actors, dancers, comedians and other performers, it makes sense that the city has an amazing art scene and some of the greatest art museums in the country. From the prestigious Bellagio fine art gallery to the Las Vegas Arts District, there’s no shortage of wonderful art to discover.
Take to the sky
Book a helicopter ride and check out Las Vegas from the ultimate viewpoint. Perfect for the whole family or a romantic surprise, helicopter rides are a fun, exhilarating and an inexpensive way to see the city.
