Las Vegas is one of the world’s entertainment capitals. This glittering, unashamedly brash city specialises in doing things on a grand scale. You can test your luck in the most famous casinos, take in world-class shows and circuses on a nightly basis, and even ride the world’s highest theme rides at the Stratosphere Tower.

Las Vegas also offers visitors the chance to travel the world (or at least a Vegas version of it), all without leaving the city.

Tour Venice and ride a gondola

There’s no need to fly to Italy – you can visit Venice at the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino. The Venetian is one of the largest resorts in the world, spanning roughly 11,000 m2 and rising to a height of 145 metres. The resort features Venetian-style architecture, as well as replicas of many of the main Venetian landmarks, including the Piazza San Marco, the Palazzo Ducale, Piazzetta di San Marco, the Lion of Venice Column and the Column of Saint Theodore, St Mark’s Campanile and the Rialto Bridge. It even includes a series of picturesque canals, on which you can enjoy a gondola ride.

See the pyramids

At the Luxor Las Vegas hotel and casino, you’ll find an actual pyramid, twin 22-storey ziggurat towers, an obelisk that’s over 40 metres high, palm trees and even a life-size replica of the Great Sphinx of Giza. The hotel itself is housed in the pyramid, which is a whopping 30 storeys high – the hotel rooms are located on the pyramid’s outer walls. Guests reach them via elevators that travel at a 39-degree angle. A fixed light beam projected from the top of the pyramid is reputed to be the brightest in the world.

Be dazzled by Monte Carlo

Not to be outdone by the famous Place du Casino in Europe’s Monte Carlo, the Monte Carlo Resort and Casino in Las Vegas includes marble floors, graceful arches, elaborate chandeliers, classical fountains and gas-lit promenades. You’ll also find a casino floor that spans an incredible 9,500 m2.

Take a trip to Polynesia

The Mirage

The Mirage Hotel has a Polynesian theme. Here you’ll find Las Vegas versions of all the key features you might associated with a Polynesian island. The reception area features a giant aquarium with as many as 1,000 different species of sea creatures, and a hotel atrium is filled with rainforest plant life, palm trees and water features.

There’s a fake volcano that “erupts” on the hour every evening from 8 p.m. until midnight. The eruption is accompanied by plenty of fire, sound effects and – to top it all – even a distinct pina colada fragrance!

Travel back in time: watch a show in ancient Rome

Last but not least, you can pretend you’re in ancient Rome at Caesars Palace, which is one of the city’s most famous luxury hotels and casinos. This is where you’ll find the Colosseum, which hosts some of the biggest shows and concerts in Las Vegas. The hotel consists of six towers, each featuring Roman-style architecture and named after famous Roman emperors or landmarks.
